Portland Kangeiko 2014

What is Kangeiko?

Kangeiko is a tradition in Kodokan Judo dating back to 1895.  Two intensive training sessions are held during the year: Kangeiko (during the coldest time of the year) and Shochugeiko (during the hottest time of the year) to develop and test one’s perseverance.  The goal of Kangeiko is to attend all 10 days of practice.   Life is complicated, arranging things with one’s spouse, job, and other stuff to train 10 days straight is almost as challenging as the physical demands of the training.  It is supposed to be that way,  that is part of the challenge.  To recognize their perseverance, those who attend at least 7 of 10 practices will receive a certificate of participation, those who complete all 10 practices will receive a certificate of completion (and perhaps something else).  Official sign up will be on the first night of practice, but you can also start later if you wish.  The roll of participants will be called at the end of each training session.

If you cannot fully participate you are still very welcome to attend as many training sessions as you can.  We have also made Kangeiko into a chance to train with people from other Portland area Dojo to perhaps learn a few new things as well as sharing a bit of Judo fellowship and sweat.

For those who are interested in attending the entire session, we are asking a voluntary $10 fee to cover the costs of the certificates, organizing, etc.  There will also be a potluck dinner on the Saturday following Kangeiko to give out the certificates and share stories and fellowship.  All are invited regardless of their participation in Kangeiko.
